Fyrstenberg/Matkowski battle past Djokovic/Tipsarevic into the quarterfinals – Rogers Cup 2011
Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski of Poland came back after dropping the first set to overcome Serbians Novak Djokovic and Janko Tipsarevic 3-6, 7-6(4), 10-5 in the second round at the Rogers Cup in Montreal on Thursday.
The Poles needed one hour and 24 minutes to win the match.
Djokovic and Tipsarevic drew first blood as they broke the Serbians in the sixth game and won their next service game to blaze forward to a 5-2 lead. The Serbian pair did not lose the break advantage and served out the set at 5-3.
The seventh seeds hit 57 percent of the first serves, clinching eight of the thirteen points on the first serve and six of the ten points on the second serve in the opening set. On the other hand, Djokovic and Tipsarevic were better
than their opponents in all aspects of the game in the first set. The Serbians sealed thirteen of the fifteen first service points and five of the thirteen first return points. Djokovic and Tipsarevic saved the two break points they faced and capitalised on
the one break point opportunity they created in the opening set.
The Serbians were looking to win the match quickly as they broke Fyrstenberg and Matkowski in the third game of the second set and held their serve in the next game to grab a 3-1 lead. However, the Polish duo bounced back in style,
breaking back in the eighth game to level the score at 4-4. Fyrstenberg/Matkowski and the Serbians held their serve in the rest of the set to take it to a tie-break. The Poles claimed two mini-breaks to win the tie-break 7-4.
Fyrstenberg and Matkowski did not serve that impressively as they committed three double faults and delivered just 49 percent of the first serves in the second set. The Polish combination bagged thirteen of the nineteen points
on the first serve and eleven of the twenty points on the second serve. Fyrstenberg and Matkowski, however, succeeded in converting one of the three break points and won eleven of the 30 first return points in the second set.
The Polish pair made a remarkable start in the match tie-break as they bagged a couple of mini-breaks, racing to a 5-0 lead. Fyrstenberg and Matkowski maintained the lead until the end and claimed the match tie-break 10-5. The
Polish team claimed five of the seven return points in the match tie-break.
Fyrstenberg and Matkowski will play Michael Llodra and Nenad Zimonjic in the quarterfinals.
