Fyrstenberg/Matkowski down Lindstedt/Tecau to capture title – Mutua Madrid Open 2012
Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski of Poland won their second title in Spain’s capital, as they eased past Robert Lindstedt and Horia Tecau in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 in the Mutua Madrid Open final on Sunday. It took the Polish
duo just an hour and 14 minutes to beat Lindstedt and Tecau.
Fyrstenberg/Matkowski and Lindstedt/Tecau started by holding their serve in the first three games of the opener, taking the score to 2-1 in favour of the Poles. Fyrstenberg and Matkowski grabbed initial breakthrough in the fourth
game and consolidated on it to go up 4-1. The Polish tandem did not lose their serve even once in the set, winning it 6-3.
Ranked fourth in the world, Fyrstenberg and Matkowski won most of the points on their serve, as they banged in four aces and captured 10 of the 12 first delivery points. The Poles put away both break threats they faced and capitalised
on the only chance they received.
Both teams started in a steady manner in the second set, holding their serve in the first six games to level the score at 3-3. Fyrstenberg and Matkowski hit a blow to their opponents in the seventh and consolidated on it to win
6-4.
The Polish combination served even better in the second set, bombarding six aces and capturing amazingly 14 of the 15 points on the first deliveries. They also did a brilliant job on the second ones, converting six of the seven
on them. Fyrstenberg and Matkowski did not give Lindstedt and Tecau any break opportunity and utilised one of the three of their own.
The left and right hand combination also won Mutua Madrid Open title in 2008, when they defeated Mahesh Bhupathi and Mark Knowles in the final.
Remembering their previous win here, Fyrstenberg said, "We won Madrid in 2008 and two weeks ago we won Barcelona, so we really love to play in Spain. I don’t know why, maybe because of the food! We feel very good here."
Matkowski added, "[The Madrid victory in] 2008 was the first Masters 1000 title for us, so you always remember this one. But it’s been a great tournament. We haven’t won many big tournaments on clay, so this one, for sure, is up
there."
This is also their second title in this season, as they toppled Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez in the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell final to capture their first one two weeks back.
