Fyrstenberg/Matkowski dump Cermak/Polasek to reach doubles quarter-final – Australian Open 2012
Sixth seeded Pole duo of Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski nailed down the 11th seeded pair of Frantisek Cermak of Czech Republic and Filip Polasek in the third round of the Australian open doubles on Monday.
The contest lasted for just 79 minutes, with Fyrstenberg and Matkowski winning in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, to book a place in the quarter-finals of the Grand Slam event in Melbourne, Australia.
Like any other doubles encounter, Fyrstenberg and Matkowski kept the games short and professional, avoiding longer rallies to cruise through the games quickly. The Pole competitors exhibited another magnificent display of coordination
and team work to outclass their opponents in a convincing fashion.
Cermak and Polasek lacked the required dexterity in the contest and were often seen wrongly positioned to counter the cracking returns from the sixth seeded duo. Although Fyrstenberg and Matkowski delivered merely 57 per cent of
their first serve on target, the Poles clinched 30 out of 40 points on it en route to victory. They converted three out of five break opportunities in the match to overcome their bleak opponents, who registered merely one serve break in the entire contest
to finish on the losing side in the end.
Fyrstenberg and Matkowski were off to a fantastic start in the opener, drawing first blood in the fourth game to lead 3-1. A timely reply from Cermak and Polasek in the very next game faded away their advantage and the 11th
seed pair held its serve to level the scores at 3-3. No break point conversions were seen in the following four games but Fyrstenberg and Matkowski delivered a heavy blow to their opponents in the 10th game; breaking the serve for the second time
in the match to claim the first set at 6-4.
The Pole competitors carried on their winning ways in the next set as well and stung another break point in the sixth game to lead 4-2. Cermak and Polasek failed to recover from the damage done by their opponents, who held their
remaining serves to close out the contest at 6-3. Fyrstenberg and Matkowski will take on the top seeded American duo of the Bryan Brothers in the quarter-final clash of the Australian Open later this week.
