Fyrstenberg/Matkowski edge past Melzer/Petzschner into last eight – Internazionali BNL d’Italia 2012
Sixth seeds, Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski, came back after getting bashed in the second set to outlast Austrian-German tandem of Jurgen Melzer and Philipp Petzschner 6-3, 3-6, 10-6 in the round of 16 at the Internazionali
BNL d’Italia in Rome, Italy on Thursday. The match lasted for one hour and eight minutes.
Making a steady start to the match, Fyrstenberg/Matkowski and Melzer/Petzschner held their serve in the first five games of the opener to take the score to 3-2 in the former’s favour. The Poles hit a blow to Melzer and Petzschner
in the sixth and grabbed their next serve to build a 5-2 advantage. Fyrstenberg and Matkowski did not allow their opponents to come back in the set, closing it 6-3.
The Polish duo pounded four aces and did not hit any double fault, keeping in 50 percent of the first serves. They had an amazing conversion rate, securing 10 of the 12 points on both first and second deliveries. Fyrstenberg and
Matkowski saved both break points they faced and converted one of the four they received in the opener.
The story in the second set was exactly the same in the second set but this time it was in Melzer and Petzschner’s favour. Both teams did not allow the other to claim breakthrough in the first five games, taking the score to 3-2
in the favour of Austrian-German combination. Melzer and Petzschner struck in the sixth and consolidated on it to move ahead 5-2. They did not let away the opportunity and captured it 6-3.
The Austrian-German pair smacked a single ace and 71 percent of the first serves in the second set. They won most of the points on their deliveries, as they clinched 14 of the 20 first and six of the eight second serve points.
Melzer and Petzschner also attacked their opponents’ second deliveries, converting four of the eight of them into points.
In the match tie-breaker, both teams went at par in the first eight points to even out the score at 4-4. Later on, Fyrstenberg and Matkowski claimed five back to back, attaining a 9-4 lead. The Polish duo capitalised on the advantage
and sealed it 10-6.
Fyrstenberg and Matkowski kept their first serve percentage at 88 and did not lose even a single point on them, snatching all seven.
The Polish pair is slated to take on fourth seeds, Robert Lindstedt and Horia Tecau, in the quarter-final.
