Fyrstenberg/Matkowski oust Bhupathi/Paes in Men's Doubles quarterfinal – US Open 2011
Another surprising result in the Men’s Double category of the US Open, with the fourth seeded Indian duo of Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes crashing out of the quarter-final matchup against the sixth seeded Pole team of Mariusz
Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski on Thursday afternoon.
Being played at the Court 4 of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows Park, of Queens, New York City, United States, the Pole contestants wrapped up victory in straight sets 6-4, 7-6(4), to march into
the semi-final round of the last Grand Slam tournament of the running year.
The contest appeared fairly poised, with the Indian opponents providing some serious resistance to Fyrstenberg and Matkowski before letting them away with victory in the end. Fourth seeded Bhupathi and Paes were off to a sloppy
start in the opener but gathered up some pace in the second set to take the match to a nail biting finish.
Fyrstenberg and Matkowski remained focused in the game and gave away limited chances to their Indian opponents to come on top. They tuned up their individual efforts with great mastery to develop a perfect combination in the game,
taking down the fourth seeded pair in a convincing manner.
Bhupathi and Paes utterly failed to crack in a serve break in the entre matchup, squandering away the two break chances they had. Only one serve break was witnessed in the whole matchup and it came from the racquets of Fyrstenberg
and Matkowski in the opening set. Both duos secured 33 first serve points in the matchup but the Pole competitors kept winning the crucial points in the game to remain on top throughout.
The opening set was off to a steady start, with both pairs getting settled in the contest earlier on. The score board kept ticking on even terms and no serve break was seen in the opening nine games of the match. A crucial break
point conversion from Fyrstenberg and Matkowski proved decisive in the opener sealing the first set in their name at 6-4.
More intense tennis was witnessed in the following set and both pairs kept exchanging assertive winners to drag the second set into a tie breaker round at 6-6. Bhupathi and Paes lost their way once again in the contest and bagged
just four points in the decider before Fyrstenberg and Matkowski closed out victory at 7-6(4).
Fyrstenberg and Matkowski will play against the winner of the match between the Indo-Pak duo of Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi, against the British pair of Colin Fleming and Ross Hutchins.
