Fyrstenberg/Matkowski oust Gonzalez/Lipsky to reach quarters – Rogers Cup 2012
Third seeded Polish team, Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski, stomped over the Mexican-American collaboration, Santiago Gonzalez and Scott Lipsky, in straight sets at the Rogers Cup 2012 on Thursday. They juggled up a 7-5, 7-5 victory against their
rivals to secure a place in the quarter-finals at this outdoor hard court tournament held in Canada.
The seeded Poles displayed top class tennis to outsmart Gonzalez and Lipsky in their first battle against each other at the Rexall Centre. After earning the fame in one hour and 11 minutes, Fyrstenberg and Matkowski moved a step closer to lift their third
title this circuit.
The poles high-spiritedly entered this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Masters 1000 event. They quickly conquered their entire serves without facing any real challenge. Fyrstenberg and Matkowski cashed in the lone break chance in the 11th
game to get the breakthrough and seal the opener with a 7-5 success.
Ranked fifth in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Doubles Rankings, Fyrstenberg and Matkowski kept momentum running towards the second set. They got the coveted break in the third game and jumped to a 3-1 lead. Despite losing their edge in the sixth
game, the Poles remained focused and capitalised on another break chance in the 11th game. As a result, they comfortably bagged the set by winning seven games to five.
The seeded junction outshined their rivals completely in this encounter. They struck six aces and spilled fewer double faults. The Poles clobbered a lower first serve share of 47 per cent as opposed to their rivals’ 61 per cent but magnificently marked 24
out of 28 points on it.
Up next for the winning team is the fifth seeded junction of Austria’s Jurgen Melzer and India’s Leander Paes. Melzer and Paes received a walk-over win against the Canadian-Serbian team, Milos Raonic and Viktor Troicki, to set up this clash.
The top seeds, Belarus’ Max Mirnyi and Canada’s Daniel Nestor, will join the Poles in the quarter-finals. They required a single break of serve in each set to clobber a 6-4, 6-3 victory in almost an hour. They also fired six aces and dusted away all four
breakpoints they faced.
