Fyrstenberg/Matkowski prevail over Delgado/Marray in third round – US Open 2011
Sixth seeds Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski of Poland came back strong after losing the first set as they defeated Great Britain’s Jamie Delgado and Jonathan Marray in three sets 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-3 in the round of 16 at
the US Open in New York on Monday. The Poles needed two hour and twelve minutes to undo their opponents in a close encounter.
Fyrstenberg and Matkowski took the lead straightaway as they broke the Brits in the opening game of the match and consolidated on it to build a 2-0 lead. Delgado and Marray broke back in the eighth game, squaring off the score
at 4-4. The Poles and Brits won their serve in the following four games to force the set into a tie-break. Delgado and Marray claimed a mini-break early in the tie-break, capitalising on it to win 7-5.
The Brits hit a single ace and 47 percent of the first serves, converting 22 of the 26 of them into points in the opening set. Delgado and Marray played aggressively, hitting seventeen winners and committing sixteen unforced errors
in the first set. The British team grabbed seventeen of the 45 receiving points and capitalised on one of the four break point opportunities they created on the Polish pair’s serve in the opening set.
Fyrstenberg and Matkowski fought back, breaking their opponents in the fourth game and holding their following service game to take a 4-1 lead. The Poles dominated throughout the set as they broke Delgado and Marray again in the
eighth game to claim it 6-2.
The left and right hand combination had an average first serve percentage, delivering just 43 percent of the first serves in the second set. However, they converted most of their serves into points, claiming ten of the twelve first
service points and nine of the sixteen second service points. The Poles smacked seventeen winners and hit five unforced errors in the second set.
Fyrstenberg and Matkowski took an early lead as they broke the British duo in the second game to go ahead 2-0. Delgado and Marray broke back immediately and claimed their serve in the fourth game to equalise the score at 2-2. The
Poles sealed three successive games after that, breaking their opponents in the sixth game to build a 5-2 lead. Fyrstenberg and Matkowski availed the opportunity and served out the set in the ninth game, claiming it 6-3.
The Poles are slated to meet fourth seeds Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes of India in the quarterfinals.
