  1. http://www.8notes.com/guitar_chord_chart...

That page shows you which finger should go on which string for the G chord, and that site itself is excellent for all other chords you might be stuck on. (the picture it shows is the head of the guitar so aim the guitar at the screen and youll be the right way round

  2. Here is a G Major, a G Minor and a G5 "Power Chord" in tab form...

Here is a G Major chord

    _3____________________________________...

    _3______5_____________________________...

    _3______5_____________________________...

    _3___4________________________________...

    _3____________________________________...

    _3____________________________________...

You put your LEFT INDEX finger on all the 3 frets...and you put your LEFT RINGFINGER & PINKY on the 5th fret...and last you put your LEFT MIDDLE FINGER on the 4th fret.

and here is a G Minor Chord

    __3___________________________________...

    __3________5__________________________...

    __3________5__________________________...

    __3___________________________________...

    __3___________________________________...

    __3___________________________________...

You have to make sure you press down on all the strings on the 3rd fret to make it sound right when you play it.

Here is a G5  AKA  "Power Chord"

    __3___________________________________...

    __5___________________________________...

    __5___________________________________...

    ______________________________________...

    ______________________________________...

    ______________________________________...

Here your LEFT INDEX FINGER  goes on the 3rd fret at the top on the 6th string... and your LEFT RINGFINGER and LEFT PINKY goes on the 5th fret on both the 5th and 4th strings.

Hope this clears up the confusion and good luck

  3. pick the way that is most comfortable it doesnt matter

  4. They're both right.

Your guitar book is telling you just to put your third finger on the 1st string 3rd fret and nothing else -- and strum only the 4 top or highest sounding strings.  That's a "partial" G chord, for beginners.

The online reference also tells you to put your 3rd finger on the 1st string 3rd fret, AND also put the 1st and 2nd fingers down as well -- that's the full or complete version of the G chord.

Don't worry about the beginner partial version of the G chord, learn the  full chord as spelled out online.  You'll need to learn it anyway sooner or later.

  5. Both are right, there are a number of different positions to play each chord just as there are many positions to play a particular note. Use which  ever you feel most comfortable with. Good luck with the playing and remember the more you practise the easier it gets.

  6. You can also use your thumb for the big string and your secong finger for the pinky string.  Deaden the 5th string with your thumb so it wont sound.
