Im living on an Army post and the gps isnt great on it but is there a way I can be at a spot, leave, and tell it to go back to that spot? Like let it know the coordinates of spot A which isnt in the GPS, go to spot B and somehow retrace my steps???

  1. On Nuvi, the feature you're looking for is called "Favorites".    You can create them on the handheld when you search for an address  or you can create them on a computer.   You can then GOTO->Favorites->[Pick from that list] to go back to your spot A.

You didn't say which Nuvi you have (there are > 30!) but the low end units don't store tracks so you can't "retrace your steps", but even they can street route you back to Spot A.
