GB men’s team eliminated from Pool A of the Olympic Tournament – Volleyball News
Following a loss in fourth straight match of the 2012 London Olympics men’s volleyball tournament this past Saturday, the home team of Great Britain dropped its chances to advance to the next round of the tournament.
GB squad was challenged by Team Poland in the crucial fourth match at the Earls Court, which accommodated almost 14,900 fans on the day of the match. The hosts failed to overcome the visitors and lost the match in consecutive sets, 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-18).
Poland’s Zbigniew Bartman and Bartosz Kurek staged an eye-catching action on the net and pushed the Britons to a loss in the match. The Polish scoring machines charted 20 and 16 respectively. On the other hand, British team had the best scorer with 14 points in the form of Dami Bakare. He put up a valiant effort, but still could not manage to delight the home fans with a better result.
Captain of the GB team, Ben Pipes shared his views after the match. He stated: “We knew it was going to be tough. Our fans were just fantastic, and it was nice to see the crowd catching on. After four games, I think we’re developing our play and I think the crowd are developing theirs”.
Earlier on, the GB team appeared in a total of three matches at the Earls Court and produced the similar results. Despite the competitive advantage of playing at home and in front of local supporters, the GB men failed to prove their potential. In the first match of the tournament, Britons lost to team from Bulgaria. Next up, the Aussies defeated home team and forced the hosts to shift to 0-2. Italy gave out an amazing performance against GB in the third match and bagged 3-0 victory.
According to the set formula of the competition, GB team will play one more match, in order to finish the preliminary round. British squad is scheduled to take on Argentina in the fifth and last match of the Olympic Tournament Prelims. The upcoming match will create yet another chance for Britons to break the ice. Nonetheless, the team has already missed qualification to the next round of the tournament.
