GB team makes a great comeback in the second Olympic match – Volleyball News
Following an early set-back in the opening match of the 2012 London Olympic Games, the Great Britain Women’s National Volleyball Team worked out a great victory in the second match on Monday, July 30.
GB squad posted a 3-2 (22-25, 25-19, 23-25, 25-19, 15-8) win over Algeria at Earls Court and delighted the home fans. A crowd of 14,000 witnessed the action. Success in the second match moved GB to 1-1 record in the tournament. The home team dropped its
first match to Russia on Saturday.
The opening set of the match was a point-to-point battle, which continued for about 27 minutes. GB hitters used the competitive edge and produced powerful spikes, while Algerian players also responded well. The spectators saw an exchange of long rallies
and the tie of score at 20-all. However, the visiting team managed to dismiss the hosts by sending 25-22 on board.
GB squad regrouped in the second set and exhibited a better performance. The consistency in attack and defence enabled the team to take second set at 25-19, which brought the game to an even point (1-1).
In the tie breaker third-set, Algeria played to its potential and threw everything in attack. Algerian side faced a lot of resistance from the opposite end, but managed to overcome the hosts with two-point lead, 25-23.
Meanwhile, Great Britain caught a good start in fourth set and maintained its lead until the set points. Algeria trailed behind and dropped fourth set with a deficit of six points.
In the final set, GB dominated from the start to end and edged out Algeria at 15-8. Hence, local team settled for 3-2 victory in the match.
Both teams had three players, who went into double digits. The trio of Captain Lynne Beattie, Janine Sanders and Ciara Michel did amazingly well for the hosts. They added 19, 16, and 10 points, respectively. Beattie also emerged as the top-scorer of the
match.
“One of our aims was to inspire the nation, so it's great that people were watching. The fans have been a huge part of it, they've been there to back us when we've been down,” said Lynne Beattie, the Captain of British team.
Likewise, the Coach of Great Britain Audrey Cooper added: “It's a really good win and we had to dig deep. It's a historic win.”
British ladies will return to action in the next match on Wednesday, August 1. Home team is scheduled to take on Italy in the third match of the tournament. On the other hand, Algeria will try its luck against Russia in the upcoming match on Wednesday. Check
