GBR versus USA showdown at the 2011 Great North City Games – Athletics news
British athletes are all set to take on the American contingent in the heated event of this year’s 2011 Great North City Games, which are scheduled to commence on September 17. For marking its dominance over the showdown, the English team will rely on the
performance of Mo Farah, the 28-year-old Somalia-born British runner, while to encounter their hosting rivals, USA’s contingent will enter the field which boasts of no lesser than six World Athletics Championships medallists.
The contest being staged tomorrow will mark the inauguration of an athletics filled weekend, which also expects to observe some of the finest performances in Great North Run Half Marathon, an event which has been regarded as IAAF Gold Label Road Race.
In the first race that has been planned to kick-off in the event, Farah will strive to overdo his American rival, Scott Bauhs, who had finished third on the podium in the 10,000m trials on the track. Another English athlete, the 30-year-old Andy Turner will
be dealing with tougher competition in the Hurdling contest where he will have to contest formidable American Hurdler, Jason Richardson, who is a reigning world champion in the 110m hurdles. Joining him on the field will be David Oliver, the fastest athlete
of the season.
Another interesting showdown will take place between Bernard Lagat, the silver medallist of the World Championships in Daegu over the distance of 5000m and Andrew Osagie, the British 800m who topped in the trials. Similarly, Walter Dix, the American sprinter
who is s specialist in the 100m run and who also happens to be a double world silver winner, will take over English runners, Marlon Devonish and James Ellington.
A sizzling performance for spectators in Gateshead is also expected from Dwight Phillips, the American World Long Jump Champion. Observing the athlete, who also specialises in 60m and 100m competitions, will definitely be a worthy event for his English spectators.
Another pacing contest will take place among 100m specialists, where the meet will witness an on-track confrontation between the under 10-seconds American runner, Ivory Williams and Harry Aikines Aryeetey, while the high hurdling competition will take place
between Jeff Porter and Christian Malcolm.
On the Women’s side, the grapple between Carmelita Jeter, sprint queen from America who is the reigning world champion and her British counterpart Anyika Onuora and Abi Oyepitan shall be observed. In Hurdling competitions, Dawn Harper and Danielle Carruthers
will take on Ashley Helsby and Sarah McGreavy for the event title.
