Question:

GE Refrigerator Ice Maker Question???

by  |  earlier

My husband and I bought a used GE refrigerator a year ago that has an automatic ice maker and dispenser. She told us the ice maker worked. My husband connected the water line, the water ran all the way to the back of the refrigerator, but NOT up to the ice maker. It's not making noise like it's pumping or anything. It's been connected for 2 days and still nothing. The freezer is set to the coldest setting, the lever IS in the ON position. Does anyone have any ideas? Is there a guide somewhere? It's an old model that I can't find a guide for. Model No. is TBX22RLF. Please help me determine if this is easily fixable or if a new refrigerator is needed. Thank you so much!

  1. It is hard to tell but this appears it may be one of GE's electronic icemakers.

Is the green light on? The switch needs to be on, I assume that is what you mean by the lever. On the top freezer model I think there is a safety lever that has to be engaged by the bin being in place to power the icemaker. I have seen those buckets have a chunk missing (broken out) on the back and then the switch doesn't get closed.

Make sure the bin is fully in position all the way to the back. Sometimes the bin doesn't get in all the way if it hits the "prongs" in the back wrong that drive the ice dispenser. But that also causes trouble closing the door.

Last, being electronic, you might want to try to "reboot" it by cutting the power to the refrigerator and restoring it, now that the icemaker is cold.

Some of the GE electronic IMs had a reset position on the switch where you held it down in the on position. But I do not think that particular one does, unless it has been replaced.

That is all I can think of at the moment.

    Good Luck.

  2. The water valve is probley bad, it is a dual valve in the back one side feeds the door and the other feeds the I/M. I would pour some water into the mold of the I/M and see if it drops the ice, this could take a few hours. If it drops the ice the I/M is OK. The water valves like to leak or drip like a faucet and with freeze up the fill tube inside the box. Remove the 1/4 inch clear plastic line off the water valve at the bottom of the box and blow in it, if frozen you will know. You must remove the ice from the fill tube when installing a new valve. Take the I/M out and remove the fill tube and run under hot water.

  3. You received some good possibilities already, but there may be more to it. Check this site and see if you can spot your problem -

  4. make sure there is no blockage in the water hose that runs from your water supply to the fridge. it is like that this is your problem. i hooked up my new one a few years ago, and it took a few attempts to get this right. the water tap on your water lines has to be just right, and all the connections have to be clear of obstructions. after a few attempt to get it hooked up right i gave up for a few days and then ice started coming. so i guess i had it right. three years now and we still have ice. good luck, hope it helps

  5. there is switch that makes the ice maker stop when it is full. the switch is attached to an arm that will be sticking out.this arm can be locked in the up position to prevent the ice maker from working. make sure it is in the down position.
