The only actual pertinent part to this question in the clip above is from 0:00 to 0:20. It provides a succinct synopsis that contains many themes and production styles that made Star Trek salient. While recently watching parts of the newest Star Trek show 'Enterprise' which ran from 2001 to 2005, I came across many fans who feel it was not worth the paper its scripts were printed on. The comments against it ranged from admonishing to vitriolic. An excellent analysis by a person who watched all five series is here:

Radical feminism has truly destroyed the Star Trek universe. It was one of the best television shows in the history of mankind and now its message to posterity lies broken - mutilated beyond recognition. It is with great chagrin that I present the above clip to you. Not because of what we see in it, but because we will most likely never see it again.

  1. Well its nice to see you've let go of the Alf questions, for now.

    But I think your point about Star Trek is way off. The original series was very progressive for the time it was created in. Lieutenant Ohura was Gene Roddenberry's "shout out" to feminists and civil rights leaders as well. He personally believed women should be equals to men in a Utopian society.

    So it stands to reason that in all of the Star Trek series that were to follow, would adhere to that core belief.

    Now my Trekkie moment is done!! LOL

  2. There are so many better things to worry about.

  3. yea

  4. I was looking forward to your question.  I thought you might have taken the time to get some clips of something besides "Alf" or "Star Trek."  That's so last week.

  5. There is positive discrimination or at least loaded casting going on in some television. Films don't seem to suffer as badly, even in films not portraying reality there is a better balance.

    I saw  the opening episode of that rather bad remake of 'Bionic Woman' and when she was running fast through the forest a girl in a car remarked about this to her mother, who didn't believe her. The child then said: "I think it's cool a woman can do that".

    That was extremely unnatural coming out of a child's mouth, it was the work of loaded script writing.

    I don't share your poor attitude towards women, but I share the realisation that Television is in the grip of positive discrimination which is sometimes gratuitous and stupid.

  6. Another day, another repetitive and irritating post for Anatol.

    ::sigh::

    Funny thing is, he's so consumed in his self-importance that he can't even see when certain people agree with them. Either that or he doesn't have the capabilities to properly read. This of course leads to his futile attempt at insulting people.

    ::drools::

    Yes I do believe I lost a couple of IQ points today from reading this post. I think I'll read a book now and attempt to gain it back.

  7. You bet, plenty of shows have been ruined by this notion (whether they would have been successful otherwise is another matter).

    A great example is "Everybody Loves Raymond", the wife can do no wrong and the husband ranges from being so stupid as to being innocent due to mental incompetence to being evil incarnate.  Even if the wife is portrayed as doing something wrong (like the PMS episode, wasn't that great to watch over dinner?), it's still not her fault and it is the husbands fault for even bringing it up.

    Along these lines, another pattern that irritates me is when TV scientist (like House or Bones, both shows I like) get into the metaphysical and dismiss all views other than their own as absurd, why bother?  It doesn't flow with the show, and they are largely (if not entirely) inaccurate.

    I watch TV to be entertained, not insulted, not indoctrinated, not even educated (unless I'm watching the history/discovery channel).

  8. What are you talking about? How was the classic series of star trek sexist? Why is it feminists fault it changed?? How has it changed, I'll tell you: the only reason it's changed is because Captain Kirk is no longer in charge. Picard is not in the same leauge. Kirk, Uhura and Spock were the best characters in Star trek, none of the other series will surpass DR. SPOCKS ALMIGHTY LOGIC!

    Live long and prosper.

  9. I think radical feminism totally destroyed the tribbles.
