GETTING RID OF OLD PAINT from wooden stairs?

The paint is in a lot of coats and it was there for over 20 years. I want to get rid of it, so i can repaint the stairs/polish it. how can this be done? thanks

  1. In the Uk you can by a stripper which is like a clay which you trowel on and wrap it in cling film, after a few hours you peel it off and wash it over with water. It does not smell much. Normally it is used for stripping paint off wood on the exterior of buildings.


  2. If you plan to do it yourself, you will need a tool called a 5 in 1 scraper. It looks like a putty knife except one of the sides has a point for getting into corners or, tight places. The other side has a half moon shape for doing railings and other rounded spots. They cost about $10 at lowes.

    Aside from that you will need a good paint stripper and plenty of time if you wish to take it all the way down to bare wood.
