Question:

GFCI Problem in Kitchen

One of the GFCI outlets in my kitchen is "breaking". I have narrowed the problem down to one outlet. It seems that when I plug something into that outlet it will work for a short period of time (~20 minutes) and then the GFIC breaks. I replaced the outlet but this morning my coffeemaker made coffee but then the GFIC went off. Any ideas?

  1. Did you think that maybe the gfci is doing its job and theres a problem with your coffee maker or other appliance you have pluged into that circuit. Try pluging the applainces you have in the kitchen into another GFI, maybe one in the garage. If it trips then you have your prime suspect.

  2.   Suggesting the same as handy.. The GFCI may be getting weak.. They will over many times of working? Is that outlet the furthest away? And letting it "pull" the load the furthest? I think your guess is the way to start, change the GFCI .. Won t hurt to try that simple try 1st  GL

  3. It's possible your gfi has gone bad and under load trips when it warms up try replacing it . make sure the breaker is off before serving it

  4. Are you running too many applicances at once? You may be overloading the circute. Try running only the coffee maker...if it doesn't trip..try running the coffee maker with another applicance. If this causes a trip the problem is an overload. I believe you will find a 15amp breaker in your main box...it will have to be changed to a 20amp.

  5. Are you sure that this outlet is the only one of this circuit, I have seen ants get into outside outlets or sprinkler system spraying into outside outlets and cause the same problems, go look around the house first.
