Question:

GFI almost always trips when I plug something in...why?

Nearly every time I plug my straightening iron into my bathroom's electrical outlet, the GFI trips and I have to push it back in to reset it. I just was wondering why it does that. The plug is not wet, the outlet is not wet, my hands are not wet. There's no steam in the bathroom at that time, either. My house's wiring is pretty old and the circuit breaker trips occasionally even though I don't have a lot of things plugged in.

So why is the GFI tripping all the time? Just curious...!

  1. Sometimes they just wea rout , might need a new 1

  2. GFIs can wear with time and become even more sensitive to variations in the current, so it could be that, especially if it has been getting worse with time.  Replacing the outlet might do the trick.

  3. Your gfi outlet may be wired wrong.Get a gfi tester and check the outlet to see if it wired correctly. They are not very expensive. The lights on the tester are very easy to understand. If it shows that the wires are not correct you will have to make sure that the outlet is properly grounded and that the hot and neutral wires are on the correct terminals. If the tester shows that the wiring is correct and it still trips you may want to replace the outlet.

  4. You are overoading the circuit when you initially plug in your iron.
