Could you help me to discuss the limitations of GIS that are built upon proprietary software architectures and proprietary development languages. What are the benefits and costs of switching to a standardised architecture?

  1. Well, the use of proprietary software architectures and languages limits the use of your GIS in terms of compatability with other software and languages. It also limits the amount of customization to the user.

Proprietary software and languages are usually very specific for a certain project and aren't made for a broad range of users.

The benefits of switching to a standardised architecture  are that customization would be possible, different sorts of analysis would be possible, you could share your data easier and it would be more compatable with a number of other softwares.
