Question:

GIS Software for a geography student?

by  |  earlier

What software, as a geography student, should I invest in? I have not had any classes with GIS yet, but I want to become familiar with the programs. I work at a map store and sell a few of the products, but I'm just not sure which one is right for me. (They are expensive, so I don't want to do a trial and error)

I'm told Fugawi is good, but that ESRI is the best. What product would be suitable for my situation? I'm not only looking for the brand, but the specific product as well.

(I don't mind the price if it is what I want, I just don't wanna spend $200-$300 on something that I have no need for)

Thank you to everyone who answers!

  1. ESRI, its industry standard

  2. If you're planning a class at a college or university:

If your class is using ESRI the book has a trial CD in it for free. I think it's 2 weeks or 30 days.

Your campus computer lab should also have at least one computer with the GIS software installed that you can access for free.

If I were to buy I'd be sure to buy at least a base programs from the same maker as the classroom.
