GM Sandy Alderson denies offering an in-season contract extension to David Wright - MLB

Reports that the New York Mets’ General Manager Sandy Alderson has a plan to offer third baseman David Wright a contract extension during this season have been put to halt. GM unequivocally clarified that he will not offer anything during the season.
He elaborated that having discussions with Wright’s agent should not be taken as a sign of an in-season contract extension.
Alderson had to make such declaration, following speculations that Wright’s contract extension is around the corner and that the Mets will not let him invoke free agency after the season.
Wright is experiencing one of his best seasons, at the moment. His batting average stands amongst the highest and if he can continue going at the same pace, he can end up winning scores of praise at season end.
Regardless of what rest of the hitters in the line-up do, one has hardly seen a game, which features Wright and has not witnessed hits from his bat. He has acted as a linchpin of the Mets’ line-up.
Against the backdrop of such an incredible performance, it was obvious that speculations about his contract extension will be made.
Some experts maintained that the Mets will instead of offering new contract will most probably invoke option for 2013 and only after re-examining his credentials at year end, they will make a decision.
It is not like the Mets do not want Wright to stay in the club for a longer time-period, just to set the record straight, Alderson said, he is speaking about the issue and making sure fans based their opinions only on facts.
“We can talk about a lot of things that would come up short of an offer,” Alderson said. “I’m not trying to suggest that we’re going to make one or not make one or what have you. I’ve said we’d like to have David here long-term. I stand by that statement,
but I just want to make sure the record is clear.”
Meanwhile, Wright will like to keep himself aloof from the off-field events and focus only on the play.
Irrespective of his fate at the end of the season, task at hand for him is taking batting average beyond the .400 level and pencil his name beside big-wigs of the game.
