GM Scott Pioli: Kansas City Chiefs will not change organisational philosophy for draft – NFL News
Kansas City Chiefs’ general manager, Scott Pioli, has asserted that the organisation will not change its policies for the upcoming National Football League (NFL) draft and will keep on following its philosophy to develop the franchise.
The general manager was speaking with particular reference to addition of new head coach, Romeo Crennel, who replaced Todd Haley during the last season.
Pioli was of the view that the organisation should not change its philosophy with the arrival of new head coach, who will not have an assertive say in the management’s planning for the upcoming draft.
The management is not expected to follow recommendations (if any) made by Crennel. Instead, it is going to select the players, who it thinks are better for the team and then ask the head coach to train them.
“It’s an organisational philosophy and it doesn’t change from person to person. There’s going to be a way that we’re going to build this franchise. … If you don’t have a core structure and you change things based on certain dynamics, you’re setting yourself
up for failure.
“There hasn’t been much that has changed … we have our philosophy, an organisational philosophy that involves a lot of people. … It’s not just mine, it’s not just the head coach’s, it’s not just the coordinators. There’s an organisational philosophy in place.”
Chiefs have not been able to perform remarkably of late and have only marked three playoff appearances during the last 10 years. Furthermore, they lost their first playoff game in all those attempts.
Pioli has been serving as the franchise’s general manager since 2009. During his tenure, Chiefs qualified for the playoffs once.
When Pioli took charge of the franchise, Haley was serving as their head coach. Even Haley was not allowed to interfere in the matters of the team management when it came to drafting players.
During the last season, Haley was terminated and Crennel, who was serving as their defensive coordinator then, was made interim head coach.
Earlier this year, Crennel was officially made the head coach of the franchise, and soon after accepting the responsibility, Crennel said that he would continue to serve as defensive coordinator as well as the head coach.
Even though Crennel is serving two roles in the team, he is not allowed to be authoritative when it comes to making decisions regarding draft.
