GM Tom Heckert says deals soon for Cleveland Browns QB Brandon Weeden, RB Trent Richardson – NFL News
Cleveland Browns’ general manager, Tom Heckert, admits he has not recently talked to agents of rookie quarterback, Brandon Weeden, and running back, Trent Richardson, about their pending deal matters but insists it will not affect the
potential deal agreement with them before training camp.
As per rules of the professional league regulator, National Football League (NFL), all teams should have rookie players under contract before training camp. Otherwise, they cannot participate in the training.
Browns are opening their training camp on July 28. The rookies have been asked to report to the camp on July 24, a couple of days before the senior players do, on July 26.
Tom claims both players will be under contract before then and said he does not see any major issue in the way to progressing through quickly on this end.
He said:
“Oh, yeah, I’m sure they will (be in camp on time). There’s a lot of guys unsigned left, so they’ll start falling into place here pretty soon, right before camp starts. But, yeah, they’ll both be here.”
The GM apparently refuted the suggestions if there was any particular problem or hurdle in the progress of the talks on the contract matters.
A few days ago, a number of reports pointed out at Weeden apparently not happy with the team’s choice of not guaranteeing the fourth year of his deal, which he thought should have been done.
Nevertheless, Weeden in one his recent remarks about the pending deal issue said he thinks it should have been done quite earlier. He remains optimistic about getting it done before training camp.
He said:
“What’s the politically correct answer here?. I wish it was done, but I don’t know. It’ll get done. We’re working. It takes two sides, though.”
Weeden looks focused on the competition for the starting position with the incumbent quarterback, Colt McCoy.
