GM for a day?

Question

As a publicity stunt, your team ownership holds a contest for a fan to be GM for the day. YOU WIN! They promise to sign off on any deal you make.

1.) What trade would you make (it has to be fairly even), draft picks, prospects, and current NHLer's are in play?

2.) What current free agent would you target? What would you offer him?

3.) Would you keep the coaching staff? If you want to fire them, who do you hire?

4.) In keeping with the fan appreciation theme, what fan event would you set up? Meet and greet? Free skate? Family Night?

5.) You are also required to schedule one "special game" with another team to drum up interest (think winter classic, game in Europe, etc.). What is it? Who is it against?

I like detail, humor, and longs walks on the beach. Eh, I'll take 2/3.

1) Rob Blake to Detroit Red Wings  for Niklas Kronwall,2nd round pick and a player to be named later.

2)Matts Sundin 1 year 12 million

3)I'd fire the entire L.A King staff, and hire Scotty Bowman.

4)Family night every Tues..

5)L.A Kings vs. Anaheim Ducks @ the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

My day as the NY Islanders GM.

Right now, I'm thinking pretty much anyone, myself included, would be a better GM than Garth Snow.

1) I'll trade Trent Hunter to Columbus for Nikita Filatov, the 6th draft pick this year.

2) Joe Sakic - $8,000,000 - one year

3) Being that we currently have no head coach, I would hire Bryan Trottier as head coach. Everyone else can stay.

4) I'd give local youth hockey teams a chance to skate with and learn from the players before some games.

5) It would definitely be Islanders vs. Rangers at Yankee Stadium, before it is taken down.

Leafs GM:

1) Bryan McCabe and 2nd and 4th round draft pick for Zdeno Chara. If they accept, sound like a fair trade and a great trade for the leafs.

2) Rolston, 2 years 14 million. I think he will accept, maybe if he likes the city.

3) Fire no one. I'll give them a chance. Maybe a new goaltending coach. We  just got a new assistant coach who I think will be good. (Niuendyk sp?). Also we got Wilson let's see how he does.

4) Free beer and half of Tacos, can't get any better. I can just see it. All the drunk fans, we can lose but no one will notice, they will all be sleeping.

5) Winter Classic. Toronto Vs The Montreal Canadians. How , much more classic can you get.

Well, this might be a boring day.

As Wings GM:

1) No trades.  The team is great as is.

2) Don't have the room for that.

3) The coaching staff is one of the best.

4) Meet and Greet at the beginning of the season (maybe the first weekend game) and family nights on Friday games.

5) Let's Set the Record Night.  Hold a hockey game at Michigan Stadium and try to set a record for largest hockey crowd.

First order of business--TRADE--Josh Godfrey, a second round pick in 2009, and Brent Johnson for Henrik Tallender, Adam Dennis, Mike Weber, and a third round in 2009 (Washington trades with Buffalo)

Second order of business--sign Joe Sakic (1 year, 5 million). Great leadership and has offensive presence on the PP and even strength.

Nothing wrong with Washington coaching staff, would re-sign them all.

Fan Appreciation-Give away autographed game used jerseys at the last home game of the year.

Special game-Philly/Caps (Re-match of Game 7 this year) Verizon Center.
