I hit my driver 250+.Hit my 3 wood 220+. Hit my 5 wood 200+. If on the medium/high slope tees, when u are forced to use your 5 wood on certain holes to avoid rough, sand,or o.b.,does hitting from 40-60yds back allow you more room for error to use your driver?..or are the back tees on the same hole designed for a lesser club too?.

  1. I think it's a win-win situation on most courses.  You are an above-average hitter.  Playing the back tees will open up the course for longer hitters.  You can make a full swing with a driver/3 wood and still leave it short of the hazards.  It is also a confidence builder knowing you can shoot just as good of a score playing from the back tees.

  2. On most member friendly courses there is very little difference playing from the blue tees or the regular white tees.On our course the total yardage difference is 400 yards longer from the blue markers. The biggest difference is on the par 3s where all become 210 to 230 yards in length.

  3. I hit similar distances to you and on my course I find playing from the back tees brings less trouble into play for me.  Most of the bunkers and hazards are more in play for me from the middle tees, so I mostly use a 3 wood rather than driver.   Of course, if my tee shot is a bit wild with my driver, then I find plenty of trouble from the back tees as well.  More important is what yardages you have remaining into the hole when you play back.  If you find you are having to hit long irons or woods into par 4s, then better off playing middle tees vs. back tees.

  4. Over time, knowing which set of tees to use will become self-evident. If you are struggling from one set of tees - unable to reach par-3 holes from the tee, or unable to reach par-4 holes in two shots - then move up to an easier set of tees.

But as a beginner, you probably don't yet have a good grasp on your game and how far you hit your clubs.

One thing to keep in mind is that many amateur golfers (especially men) try to play from tees that are too long. It's not uncommon to see a group of guys teeing off from the championship tees, only to hit weak slices into the woods. Don't be one of these people - there's no shame in playing from a forward set of tees if that is appropriate for your game. And golfers who play from tees that are too long for their games are only slowing down the pace of play.

Accuracy off the tee is as important as distance. Moving back 40-60 yards to hit a Driver vices hitting your 5 wood from the forward tee box?

I would hit the 5 wood for accuracy.

  5. Huh?  The back tees are to challenge better players.  That is why there are multiple tees.  You choose the tee that is to your level of play.  If you want to challenge yourself then that's fine, but you may not have too much fun doing so, especially if you don't have the ability.  A lot has to do with the length of the course.

  6. When you've got trouble on both sides of a tight fairway, an accurate tee shot is a must.  Whatever club you can hit straight....be it a driver, hybrid, or iron.

"...does hitting from 40-60yds back allow you more room for error to use your driver?"  I'd say it depends on the hole.  If hitting from the back tees makes it tough to reach the "trouble areas", then I say grip it and rip it.

  7. yes and no. It all depends on the hole. Some courses force 240 yard carries on the back tees. Some, open up the fairway for you to hit driver. Some make the second fairway unreachable. It all depends on the hole.

  8. The differences in tees are for the differences in handicaps.  The middle tees (usually white) are designed to play the same for a casual golfer, who usually hits a drive around 250.  Blue tees are typically for a mid to low handicapper who hits a drive 270 or 280.  The back tees (usually black or gold) are typically reserved for pro golfers who may hit drives well over 300.  The hole should play the same based on how good a golfer you are.  You should choose which tee to play off of based on your skill level.
