Since both shots require avoiding the mushy ground(fat) or firm fairway(bouncingclub), is the set up, ball position, and swing the same?

  1. There are many factors that influence your setup, ball position and swing.  The lie, hardpan, distance, club selection, uphill, downhill, whether you need to get up over obstacles or shoot low under them, how deep the grass is, all of these factors influence your setup and swing.  The best way to know which particular setup and swing to use is by getting instruction and through a lot of experience.  The more you play, the more you will recognize the factors that influence play and know which situations require which shots.

  2. Myself when I get into these situations I change the plane of my swing, which is similar to what you do when you go from a wedge to the driver. I have found that this works best for me because there is not a whole lot of variables of the rest of the swing that get thrown out of whack. Hope this might be of some use.

  3. Well you can change your ball position and swing planes I.E. wet.....move the ball ahead a bit and try to pick the ball(no divot) Dry Move the ball back a bit and hit down pinching the ball between the club and the turf taking a divot..You can also if you have more than one set of clubs would be to change your clubs for  different conditions .......Dry use a club with less bounce so you can take a divot by digging in a little  ......Wet use a club with more bounce so the club won't dig in a much and bounce on top of wet turf no divot   Bounce is the amount of surface area under the club face (bottom of club)

  4. The swing is the same and the ball position changes. On both shots one has to hit the ball before the soft mush or firm fairway. The mushy lie will be played further back in the stance while the firm fairway shot will be played very close to the bottom of the swing in order to pick it clean from a firm lie.
