GP2 driver Sam Bird will test drive for Mercedes at the post-season testing session in Abu Dhabi
Team Mercedes confirmed that GP2 driver Sam Bird will test for the team at the post-season testing session in Abu Dhabi. This is good news for the young GP2 driver, as this would be the best chance for him to prove to the
Formula1 universe what he is made of.
“Sam has done an impressive job in the GP2 Series during his first season. He is the highest-placed rookie in the championship order with some excellent results over the year. We are very pleased that Sam will be joining
Mercedes for the Young Driver test next month,” said Mercedes team boss Ross Brawn.
Sam Bird has been amazing in the GP2 championship in his debut season, as he scored his first victory at Monza and is in fifth place in the drivers’ standings currently. A Formula1 drive is like a treat and a reward for the
drivers in GP2 and the ART driver has previously tested a Formula1 car as he completed a test session in 2007 for Williams.
Ross Brawn is confident that Sam will provide the team with consistency and feedback as that is what the team requires vitally at the moment. He believes that this would be an excellent chance for the young driver to explore
his skills in an F1 car.
“Sam has been chosen due to his relevant current single-seater pedigree through his competition in GP2, the F3 Euro Series and British F3 and as an added bonus, he will have experience of the track from his GP2 racing over
the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix weekend,” he added.
Norbert Haug, who is the president of Mercedes Motorsports, was also delighted to have the young driver as a part of their team in Abu Dhabi.
He believes that the Young Driver test days in Abu Dhabi are important for any young driver who hopes to enter the Formula1 world, and the team also learns a lot after working with the next generation of drivers.
“Sam Bird, who competed in the F3 Euro Series last year with our DTM partner team Mucke Motorsport before he progressed to the ART team in GP2, who are also partners with Mercedes-Benz in F3, fulfils these requirements,”
said Norbert.
Sam Bird is expected to participate in the final Grand Prix of the GP2 championship in Abu Dhabi before the testing sessions. The team is looking forward to working with the ART driver at the post-season test sessions and
progress in any way they can.
