  1. Take the grade that you earned in each class and multiply it by however many credits it was worth.  Add up the total, and divide it by how many credits you have!

  2. Credits do matter.  Summing up credits is essentially a weighted average.  Let's say we have this scale:

    A = 4.0

    B = 3.0

    C = 2.0

    D = 1.0

    E = 0.0

    For the sake of simplicity let's say you take 3 1-credit classes and get A's in all of them, but you also take 2 .5 credit classes.  You get a B in one and a D in the other (it was a class you didn't like).

    In total you took 4 credits.  Your GPA is calculated as follows:

    (1*4.0 + 1*4.0 +1*4.0 + 0.5*3.0 + 0.5*1.0)/4

    = (4 + 4 + 4 + 1.5 + 0.5)/4

    = 14/4

    = 3.5

    So in this example the GPA is 3.5.

    Most schools calculate on the 4.0 scale (with 4.0 being A or A+ and 0.0 being failure). That's probably the one you should use.

  3. For each class, multiply the number of credits by the grade value indicated below:

    A = 4.00

    A- = 3.67

    B+ = 3.33

    B = 3.00

    B- = 2.67

    C+ = 2.33

    C = 2.00

    C- = 1.67

    D  = 1.00

    F = 0.00

    Add up the values and divide by the total number of credits you've earned, and you've got your GPA.  Checkout the website below if you want to use a GPA calculator.
