GPS Tom Tom or Garmin!?

Im getting my first GPS, i hear that tom tom has free upgrades and garmin doesnt is this true? Also which one is better and why?

We just got our first gps...and it is a Garmin.  We love it; worked great on our vacation.  As for upgrades, the newest map should come with it, if it does not, you can download the newest map when you register your unit online.  You won't be charged if it is new and doesn't have the latest map.  After that, however, it is around $75 to get the new maps.

I can't speak as to whether it is free for Tom-Tom units.

I bought mine two years ago and after heavy research went with Garmin nuvi350

It is very good, but has the same problems as all GPS, they sometimes steer you wrong. Not often but you use them as a tool, not a 100%.  

As for updates, garmin caharges $75 and I doubt seriuously if Tom Tom offers free ( or continues that if it does)

I also regret getting one with the MP3 player in it.  While playing music, if you get a direction the MP3 pauses which really gets annoying.

Remember, for everyday purposes, the GPS is just another toy.  And they are frequently ripped off if left in a car.  Even if you only leave the holder on the dash or windshield, you are asking for trouble.
