Question:

GRE: Antonyms and Analogies? ?

There are thousands of words out there, any number of which could be found on the GRE, in the Antonyms and Analogies sections of the test. How is it possible to know what words to study, when you could study hundreds of meanings for certain words, go to take the GRE, then realize that NONE of the words you studied are even ON the test. That's a lot of word definitions one needs to know. What is a person to do??

  1. No one expects you to quote Websters.  But you should be able to see a word in context and have some basic understanding of its definition.  Most words will have a prefix or suffix that will give you some clue as to its meaning.  Other words you can tell by how they sound if they refer to a positive or negative.  The weird ones you should be able to figure out based on context.

Now, if you're taking a subject specific test then there will probably be relevant vocabulary which you WILL need to have precise definitions for.  But the General GRE is just that...general.
