  1. I don't know about any classical mystery novels, but Poe is a master at the mystery/horror short story.

I also recommend modern classics, such as anything by Amy Tan, Chaim Potok, Barbara Kingsolver, Margaret Atwood, etc. Kurt Vonnegut, while not mystery, per se, has some very fascinating books that unfolds almost in the same manner as a mystery.

  2. The Three Musketeers by Alexander Dumas

The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas

    Frankenstein by Mary Shelley

  3. I totally agree with "The Count of Monte Cristo", it's a great book!!  Not really mystery, but it is suspenseful, and action-packed.  A tale of true intrigue and revenge.

One of my other favorites is "Tale of Two Cities" by Charles Dickens.  It is more of an action-romance set during the French Revolution; the two cities are Paris and London.

I found "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" by Maya Angelou also very good; it's a written in a more contemporary style.  But still, it's a classic.

  4. I really dont know any classic books except To Kill a Mocking Bird. I would not suggest it to anyone. It was so boring. maybe because we read it in school and read it to slow i couldent remember what happend ,it took like 2 and half months to finish, but i hated it.

Oh and Dont read Lord of The Flies. God that book was horribe!!!

  5. I agree with you on Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, To Kill A Mockingbird, and Gone With the Wind.

    Others I could recommend are"

    Lorna Doone

    Three Musketeers

    Twenty Years After

    Ivanhoe

    Black Arrow

    Mysteries

    Murder on the Orient Express

    Rebecca

I also love some fun mystery series such as the Cat Who ..., and the

    Nero Wolfe novels.

    Happy Reading

  6. i don't know if it is classical or not, but to kill a mockingbird is a great book... it kept me reading, so yeah i love it. plus the racism issue and standing up for what you know is right, even if it isn't popular is great.

Lord of the Rings is great... contrary to popular belief, you don't have to be geeky or extremely intelligent to enjoy LOTR (although most people i talk to seem to believe this). if you love poetry, action, and a story that grips you, read them all, they are very good.

  7. "Who is John Galt?"

With those 4 words begins the greatest mystery novel ever. Not only will you find out "Who is John Galt?", you'll learn how he became famous and why you should care. The book is Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. It's the second more influential book ever. The Bible is first.

"The cheaper the crook, the gaudier the patter, eh?" - Sam Spade

If you're not ready for the big mysteries of life, then try The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett. Everyone's seen the movie; but reading the book is pure joy. I love the use of language.

    Read 'em or weep

  8. "Crime and Punishment" by Dostoyevsky sounds like just what you're looking for. It's a deeply psychological work about guilt and morality, but also has an element of detective/police work as an investigator searches for the main character.

  9. Frankenstein, Jekyll and Hyde, Dracula, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Treasure Island, Gulliver's Travels, Jane Austen's books, Jane Eyre, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, the Catcher and the Rye

If you liked A Conneticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, perhaps you should try Le Morte D'Arthur (not sure that's quite right) which is all of the legends of king arthur.

  10. my favorite classic novel is pride and prejudice. im a huge jane austen fan

  11. oooh!

    I loved:

    Pride and Prejudice

    Sense and Sensibility

    Mansfield Park

~Well all of Jane Austen's work was fab!

    ~umm . . . who else . . .

    A Midsummer Night's Dream

    ~lotsa Shakespeare

  12. Classic novels which are also mysteries:

Murders in the Rue Morgue, by Edgar Allan Poe (Poe's Dupin, of Purloined Letter fame, is often cited as the first detective in fiction.  In any case, this novel is both groundbreaking and compelling as a mystery.)

    The Moonstone, by Wilkie Collins

    * Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

    A Study in Scarlet

    The Sign of the Four

    The Hound of the Baskervilles

    The Valley of Fear

    * Agatha Christie

Murder on the Orient Express (already mentioned by red unicorn, but I totally second it)

    And Then There Were None

The Name of the Rose, by Umberto Eco

The Man Who Was Thursday, by G.K. Chesterson

  13. The Count of Monte Cristo

    and

    Lolita

    and

    Catch-22

  14. The obvious classic mystery novel would be 'Sherlock Holmes' by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I've not read it, but it is a classic, and you generally can't go wrong with those.

However, I have read 'Jane Eyre' by Charlotte Bronte, as well as 'The Great Gatsby' by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Both were great books, especially Gatsby.

Here are some classic novels, you may enjoy, or may just want to look into:

    --'Peter Pan' by J.M. Barrie

--'The Portrait of Dorian Grey' by Oscar Wilde

--'Oliver Twist' or 'Great Expectations' by Charles Dickens

    --'Frankenstein' by Mary Shelley

    --'Dracula' by Bram Stoker

--'Pride and Prejudice' by Jane Austen

--'The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe' by C.S. Lewis

--'War of the Worlds' by H.G. Wells

--'Journey to the Center of the Earth' by Jules Verne

--'The Lord of the Flies' by William Golding

--'Gone with the Wind' by Margaret Mitchell

    --'Invisible Man' by Ralph Ellison

I could go on, and on! Hope that helps!!
