"If it wasn't for the mist we could see your home across the bay," said Gatsby. "You always have a green light that burns all night at the end of your dock." Daisy put her arm through his abruptly, but he seemed absorbed in what he had just said. Possibly it had occurred to him that the colossal significance of that light had now vanished forever. Compared to the great distance that had separated him from Daisy it had seemed very near to her, almost touching her. It had seems as close as a star to the moon. Now it was again a green light on a dock. His count of enchanted objects had diminished by one. "

  1. I think that Gatsby is talking about how much he loves Daisy but all she sees is his money and her love for him is not close to her heart but that even still he is always there if she changes her mind.

  2. From what I remember about the Great Gatsby, there are two reasons this part of the novel is significant. Firstly, the significance of the "green light" is that it is symbolic of Gatsby's dream. Secondly, and more importantly, "count of enchanted objects had diminished by one" describes the tragedy of the American Dream. In the moment of the greatest happiness, is the experience of the greatest sorrow and pain. As soon as the dream is achieved, its significance is gone and it no longer has its former value. When Gatsby is reunited, in a way, with Daisy in this scene, he realises that she cannot live up to his expectations of her, the image of her that he had built up during their five years apart. She falls short of the promise of his dream

  3. It's an example of how, in Life, realities are often not as attractive as illusions and expectations.  Mild example is the common feeling that the anticipation of Christmas Day is often more fun than the actual opening of gifts.  Gatsby had focused on that green light as a representation of how good it COULD be to be close to Daisy, but with her close, the light became just a light, not a representation of potential joy.
