Question:

GT Bike from Halfords?

I am getting a new bike soon and I want a GT Chucker XS1 which they sell at Halfords for £379. Its a good deal and it has hydraulic disk brakes, RST Launch forks etc. Alot for only £379. I am just hesitant because Halfords has an awful reputation.

Shall I get it?

  1. what you need to do is make sure they haven't taken any of the components off and replaced them with cheaper ones, also if you know about about bike Assembly do it yourself instead of having them do it.

  2. my friend has one of them and he didn't have any trouble with halfords so i think you will be ok.

  3. Indeed it is a good deal. However, Halfords bike reputation is awful!  I once bought a bike from them and i had to put on some components on myself, as they forgot to put them on. So make sure that all the important components have been installed beforehand!

However, for that price you can get, and i know you can as I looked at one the other day, a Gary Fisher XC bike. Top of the range model with front and back hydraulic disc brakes, 21 gears, lightweight frame, nobbly thick tyres and front RoxShox suspension.

I don't intend to put you off from buying the GT model, but you must also consider that there are bigger branded bikes like the Gary Fisher that are easier to get replacement components for than the GT, making it easier to fix.

So just to add, make sure you have looked around very well at all types of models and then decided that you want the GT for sure. Not saying that the GT is a bad bike, they have some good models out.

But if I were you, I would look around some more and you WILL find a better bike for exactly that price. Gary Fisher, Trek, Shogun, Specialized are amazing bike companies that range their bikes from £200+. And for that price, you could an amazing bike!

Just some stuff to think about.

    Hope i helped!

  4. Don't get it from there, I'm from the US and from what i understand Halfords is like wal-mart here. I actually went to a bike shop about 2 months ago, and almost bought that bike from a REPUTABLE bike shop for the same price halfords is selling it to ya. I think it was about $550 which is right around 379 euros. So try an authorized GT dealer, you will get the same bike(tuned right of course with no parts taken and replaced with cheaper ones), probably some free tune ups, discounts, etc.

  5. Please don't buy a bike from Halfords,  I did once and regretted it by the time I got home.  Go to a real bike shop where they will give you expert help and advice.  You will also get a free service and a chance to speak to someone who loves bikes and cycling and who wants you to feel the same way. It might look like a bargain but £379 is still a lot of money so spend it wisely, there are other good bikes available for that amount.
