Hello, I looking into buying a '97 Grand Prix. I have done about 2 hours worth of research and this is my last stop for the night. I need some pros and cons of each (please skip the obvious 15-17 mpg for the gtp). and any otherrecommendationss for grand prix's (years). Thanks a lot! and I might add more information if I think of it. Goodnight.

  1. I would personally choose the GTP if the mileage isnt a big deal (which it shouldn't be).

    Here is why:

The GT will have the L36 which is a 3.8 L v6. It puts out about 205 HP and is very reliable, but has some problems. The largest problem is a plastic intake manifold that that can be carbonized over time by a lack of clearance for the EGR stovepipe. This causes coolant to get into the engine and wreak havoc. This usually occurs around 100,000 miles, and is about 300 to fix yourself (before it fails) and about 600 after it fails.

The GTP will have the L67, the same 3.8L V6 but supercharged. putting out nearly 250 HP. Along with the added horse power, you get a beefier transmission, more aggressive gearing, and a stiffer suspension (all make for an extremely fun ride without sacrificing comfort).

The L67 does not have the same intake manifold problems as the L36 does.
