GUINEA PIG. EYE goopiness. SYMPTOMS OF ILLNESS???

Hello, i bought 2 guinea pigs from petco on wednesday. they are a female pair and they arrived together at petco the day before (tuesday). and i am just now noticing that one of the guinea pigs eyes looks swollen, and very small. it is either half open, or closed, while the other eye is very big, bright, shiny and alert. his eyelids are bigger than the other eyes eyelids. the eye as a whole looks a whole lot smaller in size when you compare the two. it is somewhat crusty, and there is goop collecting on both sides of the eye.

petco has a warrenty, where we can take him in with in 15 days, if we see any problems and they will take him to the vet. and its free, so we are busy tommorow (july 4th)so we are leaning towards taking him on monday to petco, and have them take him to the vet because of the warenty.

ANYONE, please share any thoughts.

i dont know if its a symptom of an illness.or what, ANY IDEAS?

if anyONE has ANY ADVICE/INFO. any suggestions, please sharee!

  1. it might be a sign of sickness or eye infection.

that will have a high price trip to the vet.

    good luck.

  2. I've heard that something like that are symptoms of a guinea cold i suggest you take her to the vet ASAP

your guinea pig might even have an eye infection

    best of luck!!!

  3. Well mine had goopiness and crusties and she had ulcers in her eyes, and my other had a bad cold.. they will prolly put her on anti-biotics! Usually guinea pig problems can be fixed, especially if they're young. They are probably quite scared too!

  4. Your guinea pig is sick, and I think you already know this.  Eye discharge can be a sign of a respiratory infection or an injury to the eye.  Both of these are things that must be looked at immediately.  Not on Monday, but rather today.

My question regarding the warranty is this: do you get to go to the vet with your pig?  Do they come home with you after the vet visit, and you do the treatment?  What are your guarantees that they will properly look after your guinea pig when they couldn't manage to keep her healthy or sell her to you in a healthy condition?

I'm sorry to sound blunt, but you need to take the pig to a vet now.  You don't get to wait until Monday, guinea pigs get very sick very quickly.  They hide signs of illness until they are too sick to continue to hide.  Take your guinea pig to the vet now and harass petco until they pay the bill.  If you make enough of a fuss they will, regardless of what their policy says.

I know if I were showing any of the symptoms of your guinea pig I would be going to the vet right away.  I think that a living creature is more important than your forth of July plans, and certainly more important than anything you're doing in between.  You need to go to the vet right now.
