Gabe Kling, Evan Geiselman and Brian Toth advance to Round 2 at Coastal Edge ECSC
America’s Gabe Kling, his fellow countryperson Evan Geiselman and Puerto Rico’s Brian Toth secured their place in the third round (Round of 48) at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star Coastal Edge ECSC presented by Vans after clinching victory
in their respective Round 2 (Round of 96) heats that went down at Virginia Beach in Virginia, America, on Thursday, August 23.
Hawaii’s Torrey Meister, America’s Cory Arrambide and his compatriot Blake Jones successfully extended their life in the competition as well after securing runner-up positions in their respective Round 2 heats.
The conditions on offer at the main event site during the afternoon session were not too helpful, though there were still plenty of opportunities for the surfers to show-off their exquisite skills and treat the crowd to a series of impressive performances.
The 10th heat of Round 2 pitted Kling against his compatriot Ryan Briggs, Brazil’s Sidney Guimaraes and Hawaii’s Meister.
As the battle got underway, Kling got off to an excellent start, earning an 8.33 off his first business-wave and later added an additional 6.47 to his account to finish with a heat-total of 14.80 points. The score held up until the end to see him through
to victory.
Meister finished in second place with a two-wave total of 13.94 points, consequently advancing to the next round, while both Guimaraes and Briggs were eliminated from the competition after registering a heat-total of 12.66 and 11.67 points respectively.
The next heat saw Geiselman put on a superb performance to get the better of his compatriots Arrambide and Tim Reyes, along with Hawaii’s Kaimana Jaquias.
Geiselman went through a series of average wave-scores before picking a 7.90 off his first business-wave halfway through the heat and went on to back it up with an 8.67-point ride, thus finishing with a decisive heat-total of 16.57 points.
Arrambide accompanied his compatriot into the next round after finishing with a heat-total of 13.16 points, whereas Jaquias and Reyes found themselves removed from the contention for the event title after finishing with a heat-total of 12.53 and 12.17 points
respectively.
The final heat of the day saw Toth walk away with the win after registering a heat-total of 12.47 points, which included a 6.57 and 5.90-point ride.
Jones was able to survive the heat as well after registering a heat-total of 11.76 points. The other two competitors in the heat, Brazil’s Simao Romao and Australia’s Ty Watson were eliminated from the event following a heat-total of 11.57 and 10.70 points
respectively.
