Gabe Kling and Conner Coffin move into the Quarter-finals at ASP 4-Star Vans Pier Classic
America’s Gabe Kling and his fellow countryperson Conner Coffin successfully confirmed their place in the Quarter-finals at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 4-Star Vans Pier Classic that continued to deliver exciting surfing action to the large
crowd in attendance at the Huntington Beach Pier in California, America, on Saturday, March 31.
America’s Case Wilson and his compatriot Luke Davis also made their way into the Quarter-finals as well after securing runner-up place in the seventh and eighth heat of Round 5 (Round of 32) respectively.
With a considerable improvement in the surfing conditions at the primary event site, the crowd expected the battles to become even more intense as the local and international surfers continued to take each other on while pursuing a place in the next stage
of the competition.
Pitted against Wilson, Venezuela’s Francisco Bellorin and Hawaii’s Jesse Merle-Jones in the seventh heat, Kling came up with a superb performance to steal the show.
The American surfer capitalised on his local knowledge of the waves to catch a juicy wave halfway through the heat, posting a 7.67 on the score-board. Catching his second business-wave in the dying minutes of the heat, Kling added an impressive 8.83 to his
account to move to a heat-total of 16.50 points. The score remained unbeatable to seal the fate of the four-man battle in his favour and thus take him into the Quarter-finals.
Wilson finished in second place with a heat-total of 12.83 points, which included a 4.90 and 7.93-point wave. The impressive effort served to take him through into the next stage of the competition as well.
Bellorin and Merle-Jones got eliminated from the competitions after finishing with a heat-total of 10.00 and 5.90 points respectively.
The eighth heat featured an all-American affair with Coffin emerging as the standout performance. Scoring a 4.67 off his first business-wave and backing it up with an impressive 7.03-point wave, the American surfer finished with a heat-total of 11.70 points
to walk away with the win.
Davis successfully extended his life in the competition as well after securing runner-up place through a heat-total of 8.84 points, which included a 5.57 and 3.27-point wave.
America’s Nathaniel Curran and Jake Halstead were forced to leave the competition field after rounding out the bottom-two positions with a heat-total of 8.74 and 6.93 points respectively.
