Gabriel Landeskog of Sweden surprised to be named as the captain of Colorado Avalanche
Gabriel Landeskog, a Swedish professional ice hockey player, was surprised and shocked as he did not expect at all to be named as the captain of Vancouver Canucks, who play in the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL).
The 19-year-old teenager, who was selected in the first round of the 2011 NHL Draft and has been playing NHL for just one season had no idea that he would be elected as the captain in such a young age. He has also become the youngest captain in the history
of NHL. Previously the record was held by Sidney Crosby of Pittsburgh Penguins but Landeskog is 11 days younger than him, at 19 years and 286 days.
The Stockholm, Sweden revealed that he was not expecting it at all and did not know even know why he was called by the coach. He was presented the captain’s jersey by the veteran player of the team Milan Hejduk in a ceremony in front of all the media and
people in the Avalanche’s locker room but he was shocked at being presented by it in start of his career, as he said,
"I had no clue. I didn’t have any idea what [the meeting] was about. I was a little bit shocked at first. I didn’t expect this at all, especially this early in my career”.
The interesting thing is that the player is ready to step up and take the responsibility of the captain, as he added,
“But I feel like I’m ready for it and this organization feels like I’m ready for it."
The 6-foot-1, 207 pounder forward was very happy to on the moment and also disclosed that it was his dream to wear the shirt with a captain’s badge. He also gave examples of former captains and the honour of being having the same privilege as them, as he
said,
"It’s something you dream about as a kid, just being a part of an organization like the Avs and getting the honor to put the ‘C’ on with the history that this club has – [former captains] Joe Sakic and Adam Foote and obviously Milan Hejduk.
Landeskog is ready to accept the challenge but it would be interesting to see if how he does.
