Gabriel Medina wins the SuperSurf Internacional Prime 2011 title - Surfing news
Brazilian surfer, Gabriel Medina won the SuperSurf Internacional Prime 2011 title against Australian surfer, Tom Whitaker, to claim the prize money of US $40,000 in Itauna, Saquarema, Brazil.
The final match between the two surfers started in stunning fashion at Itauna beach, as Whitaker took 6.83 out of 10 points in the first wave. Subsequently, Medina snatched the highest heat score of 9.10 out of 10 points and took a massive lead of 2.27 points
against his competitor.
In the second wave, the Brazilian came out very hard against the Australian surfer and claimed 10 out of 10 points and won the competition with a sterling score of 19.10 points (out of 20).
On the other hand, Whitaker was hardly able to grab 3.83 points in the final wave and ended the match second with a total score of 10.66 out of a 20 possible points. The runner-up of the SuperSurf Internacional Prime 2011 received a cash prize of US $20,000
after the match.
Gabriel Medina said, “I don't know what to say. I won the event two years ago in Florianopolis when I was 15, but this is unbelievable! It's the first time I surfed here at Praia da Vila and I wanted to do well. I brought my entire family and I felt right
at home.”
He further added that he is grateful to his sponsors, for without them, he would not have been able to win the title.
Meanwhile, Whitaker said, “Gabriel was the best surfer of the event, without a doubt. Nobody was able to beat him today. It's nice to see a young surfer winning such an important event as this one. I think the future of Brazilian surfing is guaranteed
and I think everyone should be proud to have such a talented surfer.”
He further said that he loves to come to this venue every year, as he has had amazing performances in the event. The surfer was satisfied with his effort and glad to finish second.
Earlier, Tom Whittaker beat Gabe Kling of USA in the first semi-final heat with a fringe margin of .63 points, while Gabriel Medina won the second semi-final heat over Richard Christie with a sterling margin of 4.40 points.
