Gabriel Skoczek, Achille Nebout maintain lead as tough conditions halt Day 3 races: 470 Junior
The third day of 470 Junior European Championship was yet another tough and challenging day for the Men’s fleet, as heavy winds were blowing across the racing area in Nieuwpoort, Belgium. Due to such challenging conditions, the day ended with only one race
on the board, which was won by the standings leaders, Gabriel Skoczek and Achille Nebout from France.
The deteriorating conditions however, forced the race management to stop sailors from the second race. The start to the day was pretty encouraging for all the sailors as the breeze was blowing from 16 to 17 knots. However, mother-nature started toying with
the sailors and the winds picked up speed, eventually getting to around 30 knots.
The Race Officer, Alen Kustic told the local media about the weather conditions, “We had quite nice conditions in the beginning for race 5, 16-17 knots before the starting sequence and by the starting gun the wind had increased to 20-21 and continued throughout
the race to about 25 knots.”
He added, “The wind then shifted to the right and the swell had increased a lot, and we measured a couple of gusts of 30 knots or more. The waves became really irregular and all over the place”
However, the French pair has maintained their overall lead so far with seven points on the board. They are closely followed by their compatriots Kévin Peponnet and Julien Lebrun, who are on nine points. Day 3 witnessed a superb comeback from the German sailing
team comprising of Jan-Philipp Hofmann and Felix Brockerhoff, who won the first race in second Men’s fleet to clinch third place overall with 10 points.
