Gabriel Vasconcellos Mangabeira excels in Men’s 100m butterfly semi-finals: 2011 Jose Finkel Trophy

Gabriel Vasconcellos Mangabeira of ECP/SABESP excelled in the semi-finals of Men’s 100m butterfly event on the second day of the 2011 Jose Finkel Trophy on August 31, in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.
Vasconcellos Mangabeira dominated the semi-final of the butterfly event to conquer the top qualification spot in the final round. He completed his swim in a phenomenal time of 53.06 seconds and occupied the fastest qualification berth. Despite of his fastest
qualification effort, 29-year-old Vasconcellos Mangabeira remained 3.24 seconds slower than the world mark of 49.82 seconds, set by Michael Phelps at the 2009 Rome World Championships.
The top qualifying swimmer was just 0.14 seconds ahead of his following swimmer, Glauber Henrique Silva of FIAT/MINAS, who chased him on the finishing wall with a second ranked time of 53.20 seconds. Similarly, the 25-year-old Silva overwhelmed the efforts
of his closest competitor and team-member, Lucas Salatta, with a margin of 0.34 seconds. Salatta earned the third fastest spot of the swim by submitting a time of 53.54 seconds in the semi-finals.
Mangabeira was at third place in the initial lap of the swim, as he ended his first lap behind Silva and Salatta. Nevertheless, the 29-year-old Mangabeira cruised his way towards the finishing wall in the final lap and overwhelmed the efforts of his following
swimmers, by obtaining fastest seat into the final.
Meanwhile, Thiago M V Pereira of CORINTHIANS/S.BERNAR appeared as the fourth fastest qualifying swimmer, as he confirmed his spot in the final round with a timing of 53.64 seconds. The crowd was stunned with his fourth best qualification, as unlike any other
participant, Pereira owns the gold medal of the 200m Individual Medley (IM) at the World Short Course Championships.
In the meantime, Kaio Marcio De Almeida of FFC/RJ transpired as the fifth fastest swimmer to qualify for the final, as he stayed 0.06 seconds behind and reported a time of 53.70 seconds. De Almeida was followed by Henrique De Souza Martins of ECP/SABESP,
who was 0.37 seconds slower than his former finisher and posted a time of 54.07 seconds for sixth qualification spot.
Moments later, Filipe Nobre Xavier Nunes of CORINTHIANS/S.BERNAR claimed the seventh best qualification spot of the swim, by clocking a time of 54.23 seconds. In the meantime, Frederico Veloso Castro of FFC/RJ qualified as the eighth finest swimmer of the
butterfly event, as he produced a time of 54.28 seconds.
In addition, these participants will swim against each other once again in the final round, where the top three finishers will be awarded a podium finish for their dominating efforts.
