Gabriel Vasconcellos Mangabeira pockets Men’s 100m butterfly gold: Day three – Jose Finkel Trophy
Gabriel Vasconcellos Mangabeira of ECP/SABESP pocketed the gold medal of Men’s 100m butterfly event on day three of the 2011 Jose Finkel Trophy on September 1, in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.
Mangabeira acquired the top finishing spot of the event by submitting a time of 53.21 seconds for the gold medal. His time was nearly four seconds slower than the world mark of American swimmer, Michael Phelps, who posted a time of 49.82 seconds at the 2009
Rome World Championships. In addition, he stayed only 2.15 seconds slower than his own championship mark of 51.06 seconds, made by Mangabeira during 2009.
The top finisher of the event was only 0.38 seconds ahead of Thiago M V Pereira of CORINTHIANS/S.BERNAR, who followed him on the podium for silver medal, by reporting in a time of 53.59 seconds. Pereira was able to escape his closest competitor, Henrique
De Souza Martins, who remained just 0.03 seconds slower than him and posted a time of 53.62 seconds for bronze medal.
Mangabeira won the hearts of the arena by displaying a spectacular swim in the two-lap event. He emerged as the top contender for gold medal in the first-half of the race, where he completed his first lap in a fastest time of 24.86 seconds, while Pereira
was able to post 25.39 seconds on the board
 Likewise, the champion maintained his fastest spot of the event in the second-half, where he overwhelmed the efforts of his strongest rivals and claimed the gold medal of the event.
The fourth position of the event was claimed by Glauber Henrique Silva of FIAT/MINAS, who was just 0.05 seconds slower than the third position holder and clocked a time of 53.67 seconds. Subsequently, Silva was in a lead of 0.19 seconds over his following
swimmer and team-member, Lucas Salatta, who touched the wall in 53.86 seconds for fifth position.
In the meantime, Kaio Marcio De Almeida of FFC/RJ emerged as the sixth fastest swimmer of the event by producing a time of 53.99 seconds. Almeida was trailed by his team-mate, Frederico Veloso Castro, who remained 0.25 seconds behind him and clocked a time
of 54.24 seconds.
The final spot of the race was obtained by Filipe Nobre Xavier Nunes of CORINTHIANS/S.BERNAR, who ended his swim with a delay of 0.41 seconds and settled as the eighth position holder with a timing of 54.65 seconds.
In addition, the arena went wild with the stupendous efforts of all participants, while the medal winners were invited on the podium for their immaculate swims after the session’s completion.
