Gaby Sanchez and Mike Stanton shine as Florida Marlins beat St. Louis Cardinals 6-5 – MLB Update
Florida Marlins’ out-fielder Mike Stanton and first baseman Gaby Sanchez both had a remarkable day with the bat as they contributed equally by hitting five RBIs which resulted in the Marlins 6-5 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium in St.
Louis on May 2.
Stanton expressed his excitement as, “These are the kind of games that show what type of team you are. We're definitely showing we're a different team from the previous year.”
The Marlins were unable to score in the first two innings while the Cardinals led off 2-0 when Lance Berkman and Yadier Molina both completed their RBI singles in the first inning. Berkman had an exemplary season so far as he batted with .450 average including
eight homers and seven RBIs.
Berkman was disappointed a little bit as he said, “Heck, I'd like to win it every week. You try to ride the hot streaks as long as you can ride them and hope that the down times don't last too long.” The third inning was full of scoring from both sides.
Hanley Ramirez had a walk with two outs on loaded bases and tied the game 2-2 but Sanchez hit his fourth homer of the season to extend the lead 4-2 in the third inning.
The Cardinals’ batters also added some runs in the third inning when Berkman struck a high shot towards the centre-field position which was considered as a two-run homer. It was his ninth homer of the current season and with that contribution, the Cardinals
again took a 5-4 lead.
In the fifth inning, Stanton struck a solo homer and re-tied the scorecard 5-5. The Cardinals were scoreless for the rest of the innings. Stanton hit his second triple of his career towards the centre-field position and posted a run on the sacrifice fly
of Gregg Dobbs in the eighth inning to give the Marlins a 6-5 lead.
The Cardinals’ starter Kyle Lohse was too expensive as he threw six innings and permitted five runs on six hits with five earned runs and just two strike-outs. However, the relievers performed better as they gave just single run in their respective pitches.
On the other side, the Marlins’ starter Chris Volstad also gave five runs in five inning pitches. Leo Nunez pitched in the ninth inning for his 10th save of the season.
