Gadomski/Smola upset Cipolla/Vagnozzi in the quarterfinals – BNP Paribas Polish Open 2011 CH
Piotr Gadomski and Maciej Smola of Poland upset second seeds Flavio Cipolla and Simone Vagnozzi of Italy in three sets 6-3, 4-6, 10-4 in the quarterfinals at the BNP Paribas Polish Open in Sopot, Poland on Thursday. The wild card
entrants took an hour and 27 minutes to undo their opponents in a tough encounter.
Gadomski and Smola broke the Italians in the fourth game and held their next service game to take a 4-1 lead. Cipolla and Vagnozzi broke back in the seventh game to reduce the deficit to 3-4 but they failed to hold their serve
again in the next game, trailing 3-5. The Poles served out the set in the next game, winning it 6-3.
The unseeded pair hit 58 percent of the first serves and two aces in the opening set. Gadomski and Smola claimed 73 percent of the first service points and 64 percent of the second service points in the first set. The Poles returned
quite well, winning six of the fifteen points on the first return in the opening set. Gadomski and Smola converted two of the three break points on Cipolla and Vagnozzi’s serve and saved one of the two break points on their own serve in the first set.
Cipolla/Vagnozzi and the Polish team broke each other twice in the first eight games of the second set, equalising the score at 4-4. The Italians succeeded in breaking their opponents for the third time, bagging the set 6-4.
The second seeds kept their first serve percentage at 65 percent and won 53 percent of the first service points in the second set. Cipolla and Vagnozzi turned around the second set with the help of their returns, clinching eleven
of the seventeen first return points in the second set. The Italians capitalised on three of the five break point opportunities they created on the Polish pair’s serve and saved one of the three break points on their own serve in the second set.
Gadomski and Smola raised the level of their game in the match tie-break, grabbing three mini-breaks to capture it 10-4.
The Polish duo grabbed all the four first service points and two of the three second service points in the match tie-break. The unseeded pair also won 40 percent of the first return points in the match tie-break.
Gadomski and Smola will take on Olivier Charroin and Stephane Robert of France in the semi-finals. The French combination defeated Italian/Romanian pair of Alessio Di Mauro and Adrian Ungur in straight sets 6-4, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.
