Gael Monfils, Richard Gasquet pass into the third round – Wimbledon Championships 2011
World number eight, Gael Monfils of France, wins his second round clash against the unseeded Slovenian, Grega Zemlja, at the Wimbledon Championships at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London, England.
In the Wednesday afternoon’s contest, Monfils displayed his brilliant tennis skills once again, driving the Slovenian out of the Grand Slam event after settling the final scores at 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 7-6(7), taking two hours and fourteen
minutes of play.
Monfils dropped the opening set early but made a tremendous recovery to reel off the following three sets to finally come out as the winner. The French served with 69 per cent accuracy, with 15 thudding aces and conceded 27 unforced
errors in the contest. His 48 winners were replied with 40 from Zemlja, who squandered away six out of nine break opportunities to lose the matchup.
The Slovenian took off the contest with commanding aggression and took down Monfils at 6-4 to get one up in the match. Zemlja suddenly went through a drastic slump in the following two sets, launching a series of errant strokes
and letting the French come on top of the game. Monfils bagged the next two sets at 6-3, 6-3, to get a substantial lead in the contest.
Zemlja got back his pace in the fourth set, levelling the scores at 6-6 and enforcing a tie breaker into play. The decider went on neck-to-neck before Monfils delivered the final blow to close the contest at 7-6(7), advancing to
the third round of the Grand Slam tournament where he will face the Pole qualifier, Lukasz Kubot.
World number 13, Richard Gasquet of France also cleared the second round after he defeated the Russian opponent, Igor Kunitsyn convincingly in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, 6-4. Kunitsyn hung in the contest for just 98 minutes before
submitting the game to the hard-hitting French opponent and letting him an easy pass to the third round of the Wimbledon Championships.
Gasquet registered 10 aces and six serve breaks to oust Kunitsyn from the competition. 42 winners were fired from the French’s racquet, while Kunitsyn scored merely 17 winners to finish on the losing end. Gasquet blew away the
Russian in the opening set and then carried on with his winning momentum to reel the later two sets as well to register a comprehensively victory. 17th seed Gasquet will square off against the lucky loser, Simone Bolelli of Italy in the third round
clash later this week. Bolelli got into the lime light after upsetting the 14thseed Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland in the second round of the mega event.
