Gael Monfils beats Janko Tipsarevic in quarterfinal – Legg Mason Tennis Classic 2011
Starting off on Friday, 5th August was the quarter-final round of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic, an ATP world tour 500 event. Played at the William H.G. Fitzgerald Tennis Centre in Rock Creek Park was the 4th round
quarter-final match between Gael Monfils, French world No.7, and Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia. The match concluded 6-4, 6-4 with Monfils exterminating his challenger in no less than one hour and 33 minutes.
Although the Frenchman struggled in the Davis Cup, Mercedes Cup and also knocked out in the Hamburg open, he finally got hold of his form to make it to the semi-final of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic. The mighty Frenchman had an
edge over the Serb as he led the head-to-head score 4-3.
On the other hand, Janko Tipsarevic, ranked world No.25 had a tough time playing the world No.7. The Serbian did manage to put a strong defence in front of his rival but could not retain for much long. Never the less, the 27-year-old
did scare the huge world No.7 at a few points.
Opening the first set of the match, Tipsarevic served first and rolled the score card. Following the Serbian, Monfils soon levelled the scores. Breaking the world No.25 in game 2, the Frenchman took the lead and followed with another
win in the next game. Janko manage to break the world no.7 later in the set but collapsed with losing another himself. The set ended 6-4 with the Frenchman securing 40 points together with 22 service wins and 18 returners.
The second set started off with the huge Wold No.7 coming forward with a stronger defence than that in the first set. With 57 percent accuracy in his first serve, Monfils succeeded in winning 100 percent points from that. Acing
the Serbian twice in the second set, the 24-year-old top seed broke his challenger in the second game.
The second set ended at 6-4 in favour of the Frenchman. In addition to the 40 points in the first set, Monfils secured another 39 in the second totalling 79 on the whole to his quarter-final win. the 24-year-old will now face John
Isner, the home player, for the final round seat.
