Gael Monfils bombshells Alex Bogomolov Jr. in straight sets in 2nd round – Rogers Cup 2011
Gael Monfils, the Frenchman, won his 2nd round match defeating his Russian born American rival, Alex Bogomolov Jr., at the Stade Uniprix Centre hard court circuit, Montreal. The one hour 35 minutes match ended the Frenchman’s
day, Wednesday,10th August, winning in straight sets, 6-2, 7-6(5) and making it to the round of 16 of the Rogers Cup 2011, An ATP Masters 1000 event.
Bogomolov, 28-year-old, has been up as a tennis professional since 2002. Currently at the verge of his career, the American ranks at world No.57. His last 10 games run has, however, has not been any where satisfying. The right
hander, even though played most of his previous matches on hard circuit, could not put forward a strong defence against the French world No.7, Monfils.
However, the Frenchman seemed bulldozing his challenger from the start. Considered as one of the best all circuit player, Monfils toned up his muscles to hit on hard at the American. Finalist to the Legg Mason Tennis Classic, Monfils
took the first door on the right and entered the Rogers Cup to try his luck in Montreal.
Initiating the match, Bogomolov served first to open the set and the match. However, the 24-year-old French disintegrated the Americans defence in the first set, breaking him to lead 1-0. Extending his lead further on, Monfils
secured a 2-0 win in no time.
Bogomolov won his first game of the match, game 3, to cut the Frenchman’s lead to 2-1. With a startling performance, Monfils jumped to a 4-1 lead when he won game 4 and broke the American in the 5th. Frustrated by the
severe beating, the American lost yet another game, 5-1, and eventually after winning one last game, game 7, lost 6-2.
Like any other player, the 28-year-old retaliated with desperation, in need to win the second set, and gave out his best. With a stronger defence, the American started off the set serving first and rolling the scorecard. The set
boiled up as both players replied each other with staggering shots levelling the scores first at 2-2, then at 3-3, 4-4, 5-5 and finally into a tiebreaker.
Although, the American improved his play in the second set, could not finish off with a win. Eventually losing the second set as well, 7-6(5), lost the match 2-6 and 6-7(5) to the Frenchman.
Monfils defence provided him with a seat in the round of 16 where he will face the Serbian, Viktor Troicki, to battle it out for the quarter-final round.
