Gael Monfils desolates Pablo Andujar in round 2 – Valencia Open 2011
Wednesday, 2nd November, continued with the starting of second round of Valencia Open 2011 with Gael Monfils, French world no. 10, beating down Spaniard, Pablo Andujar, world No.46, in straight sets 6-2, 7-6(5) in an
hour and 40 minutes hard indoor circuit match at Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències, Valencia, Spain.
Playing their second head-to-head fixture, Monfils overshadowed the lower ranked Spaniard to finish off with a 2 nil lead over the world No.46. Heading down the blue circuit, Andujar won the toss and took his side to open up the
match.
Warming up first, Andujar served in for the first game of the match, however, had a hard fall as he broke down losing his opening serve, 0-1. Monfils, French world No.10, took advantage of the breakpoint and extended his lead to
two games to zero bagging his opening serve.
Andujar moved on to serve for the second time in the set. Unable to make any impact, Spaniard dropped short for the second time in 3 games, breaking down and losing the third consecutive game, 3-0. Monfils pulled off another winner,
game four, to lead the set with back-t0-back wins, 4-0.
Finally, rolling down his side of the scoreboard, Andujar won his first game of the match, however, was no threat to the leading Frenchman. Monfils, left with two more wins to finish off the set, served out two out of the last
three games winning the set with a smothering performance, 6-2.
Moving on with set two, Spaniard continued as he served out the set opener, 1-0, followed up by the higher ranked Frenchman evening out the scores right away, 1-1. Serving for game three, Andujar almost lost a breakpoint, however,
managed to get away win a win, 2-1.
Levelling the scores again, Monfils bagged another winner of respective serve, 2-2, switching back the serve. With the two battling out neck-and-neck, levelled up first at 3-3, 4-4, and then on 5-5 before both of the two broke
one-after-the-other to even up again at 6-6 and into the tiebreaker.
Pressure increased on the Spaniard as he had to win in order to save the match. Unable to counter the Frenchman, Andujar broke down and lost the tiebreaker, 7-5, the set, 7-6(5) and the match in straight sets as the Frenchman made
his comfortable walk into the quarter-final round of the ATP World Tour 500 event.
Making his way in the round of eight, Monfils now sit comfortable as his quarter-final rival seat awaits the winner of the match between Marin Cilic, and Marcel Granollers.
