Gaganjeet Bhullar aims to become the fourth Indian to win the Asian Tour Order of Merit title
Gaganjeet Bhullar is confident to become the fourth Indian player to win the Asian Tour Order of Merit title, by winning the Asian Tour’s season-ending Iskandar Johor Open.
The US$2 million event will be staged from December 13 to 16, 2012, at the prestigious Horizon Hills Golf and Country Club.
In 2002, Jyoti Randhawa became the first Indian player to win the money list title on the Asian Tour. Arjun Atwal then followed him by taking home the prestigious title in the very next season.
In 2006, Jeev Milkha Singh emerged as the third Indian star to secure a victory in the Order of Merit and did the same in 2008 as well.
With the presence of big names, like the reigning British Open champion Ernie Els, Ryder Cup star Sergio Garcia and the two-time major champion John Daly, teeing up in Johor Bahru, Bhullar is confident that he can stand tall against anyone of them.
The 24-year-old currently holds the fourth spot in the Asian Tour Order of Merit and desperately needs a victory, in a bid to make it to the top of the list.
He believes that his victory in the Order of Merit will inspire a number of Indian youngsters to move forward and play professional golf.
“If I go on to win the Order of Merit, how many more Indians you think will go on to take up golf. It was what Jeev used to do 10 years ago when I was a little kid and I used to follow him. Now the next generation of golfers from India will be getting ready,”
said Bhullar.
“My confidence level has definitely gone up and I think once I get off to a good start, it’ll be hard for anyone to catch up with me,” added Bhullar, who has won two Asian Tour events this season.
Thaworn Wiratchant, in the meantime, is also confident to retain his top spot in the standings. If the Thai star succeeds in achieving his goal, he will become the oldest winner of the Order of Merit, in the history of the Asian Tour.
