Gaganjeet Bhullar eyes Asian Tour Order of Merit title
Gaganjeet Bhullar has set his sights on becoming the next Indian to win the Asian Tour Order of Merit, with a standout performance in the UBS Hong Kong Open, slated to start from Thursday, November 15, 2012.
The UBS event will be played at the Hong Kong Golf Club, and is co-sanctioned by the Asian Tour and the European Tour.
India is the only country that has produced three Order of Merit champions in the history of the Asian Tour – the most by any country in the world.
In 2002, Jyoti Randhawa became the first Indian player to hold the Asian number one title, and was then followed by Arjun Atwal in, 2003.
Jeev Milkha Singh added another two accolades to the Indian shelf by winning the prestigious title in 2006 and 2008.
This year, Bhullar plans to add to that number by making a strong move in the rankings with a strong performance in the UBS Hong Kong Open.
He currently ranks fourth in the standings, thanks to his victories in the Yeangder Tournament Players Championship and the Venetian Macau Open.
With four events left on the Asian Tour roster, he certainly has a chance of making it to the top of the list, considering the fact that the Indian is enjoying great form on the tour.
Talking to the Asian Tour’s official website, he stated that his disciplined fitness regime, and mental strength is the main reason behind his success this season.
“I’m glad I’ve improved on my mental and physical fitness over the years and they’ve been keeping me going and helping me play more tournaments each week,” said Bhullar. “This is my 12th tournament in a row since the start of the second half season and I’m planning to take some time off after Hong Kong”.
“Subconsciously, winning the Order of Merit title is at the back of my,” added Bhullar. “The season is coming to an end now and it’ll get really interesting on the Order of Merit and the world golf ranking as well”.
He also said that his excellent ball striking technique and control over his clubs will help him post decent scores in Hong Kong.
