Gaganjeet Bhullar eyes a victory in his debut performance at the Mercuries Taiwan Masters
Gaganjeet Bhullar is set to record the second Asian Tour victory of the season, when he tees off at this week’s Mercuries Taiwan Masters.
Earlier this month, the Indian recorded a victory in the Yeangder Tournament Players Championship and dedicated that to the Lu Wei-Chih of Chinese Taipei.
Wei-Chih is currently recovering from a brain tumour surgery and will not return to the Taiwan Golf & Country Club to defend his title this week.
Therefore, Bhullar wants to add another title to his resume, in a bid to offer a tribute to one of the best players on the Asian Tour.
It will be his debut appearance in the event, scheduled at a venue course that is just five minutes from Wei-Chih’s home.
According to the three-time Asian Tour winner, he has always liked to face challenges. Therefore, he hopes to enjoy his experience at the Taiwan Golf & Country Club, which is no doubt one of the toughest courses in the region.
“I’ve been on the Asian Tour for many years but I’ve never had the opportunity to play here. I like the challenges because the wind will be a huge factor and this course demands a sharp short game,” he said.
Talking to the Asian Tour website, he also confirmed that he met Wei-Chih recently and he was pleased to see the Chinese Taipei recovering from the surgery.
He stated, “It so happened we were having dinner at a good Tenpayaki place and he was there with his family. He is walking and talking to everybody and seems to be recovering really fast”.
“We have so many good memories with Lu. He is such a good player and I think any winner this week will definitely dedicate this win to him,” he further said.
This will be Bhullar’s 14th start on the Asian Tour this year. Among all his appearances, he made the cut seven times and recorded top-six positions in six of them.
Therefore, he can be a dangerous player, if he succeeds in making it to the last two rounds of the tournament.
Lin Wen-Tang, Chan Yih-Shin, Prom Meesawat and David Lipsky are some of the other big names who will be featured in the event this year.
